Although roy orbison made his name as an unrivalled performer of big dramatic ballads[with a voice once described as sounding like the slow fall of teardrops] early in his career he concentrated on rock n roll.The new style of music influenced him as strongly as all the musicians who were in their teens during the mid fifties.It took roy four or five years to develope fully his own highly distinctive way of singing.
The son of a oil driller roy orbison was born in texas on the 23 of april 1936. music was such an all,consuming interest for the youngster that he formed his own group,The Wink Westerners at the age of only 13. While he was at college he revamped the band calling it The Teen Kings.He made his first recording with it at Norman Petty's studio in New Mexico during 1955. The resultant single Ooby Dooby was issued on jewel without making such an impact.The following year roy re,recorded the number 4 Sam Phillips's Sun label and achieved a minor hit. Other releases in a similar rockabilly style failed to repeat its success. However the Sun years produced some excellent music.
In 1958 The Everly Bros had a hit with the Orbison song Claudette which led to roy being signed as a song writer by the music publishers Acuff-Rose.he also made a few recordings for RCA but this to proved to be a false dawn as none of the releases sold in any numbers.It was only after he joined Fred Fosters Monument label that he really captured the publics imagination.
Roys first two singles for Monument repeated the unsuccessful pattern of his previous discs,but the third was a song tailor made for him with its emotion filled lyrics and powerful climax Only The Lonely was a massive hit and the first in a long list of best selling records for roy.Even more popular in the UK than in the USA, Roys Top Twenty entries over the next four years included Running Scared,Dream baby,In Dreams,Falling, Blue bayou,Its Over,Pretty Woman and pretty paper most of the songs were written by roy in partnership with Joe Melson.
After this amazing run of triumphs roy;s career went into something of a decline in the mid sixties.His singles consistently made the lower reaches of the charts but only.To Soon To Know entered the Top Ten after the tragic passing of his wife Claudette in a 1966 motorbike accident.
Trying to revive his flagging fortunes roy switched to MGM records but his time with the company was marred by constractial problems which prevented much products being released.A attempt to launch a flim career in The Fastest Guitar Alive did not really work while personal tragedy struck again when his sons were killed in a domestic fire.Even if his records were no longer selling in great quantities roy retained much of his appeal with european audiences and continued to tour regularly.
In the late seventies roy made recordings for Monument,Mercury and Electra and in 1980 he had a country hit with That Loving You Feeling Again a duet with Emmylou Harris.The folowing decade saw him enjoy a quite remarkable if unexpected resurgence in popularity.His voice was featured [ singing Wild Heart]on the sound track of the Nicholas Roeg flim Insignificance then performing another number in Blue Velvet he was then asked to make an album of recordings of his old hits for Virgin with producer T-bone Burnett.Even more importantly the formation of the super group The Travelling Wilburies [with George Harrison,Bob Dylan,Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty] produced the single Handle With Care which hit the charts shortly before roy's premature death in 1988 that this renewed activity had brought roy to a new public right at the end of his life was demonstrated by the sales garnered by several posthumously released records it was fitting that he went out on a high note
